Description of the ongoing mission work our missionary is involved with...

Overview

Some twenty years ago, the Cornerstone Canadian Reformed Church of Hamilton began its work in Maceió, Brazil. When it began that work with Rev. Kroeze, and later with Rev. de Graaf, it could not imagine how richly the Lord would bless this work. The Lord provided faithful servants to plant the seed, to water it, and to tend the crop. He provided people to oversee and guide the work, and He also provided faithful churches to support the work in prayer and deed. And now, according to His good pleasure, during the past year the churches have been able to rejoice in the institution of the Reformed Church of Brazil in Maceió and the ordination of qualified, faithful men to serve as office bearers.

The Lord has begun to reap His harvest in Maceió, but we know that this does not mean we can cease working in the fields. The Lord continues to open hearts across Brazil as the Gospel continues to be preached faithfully throughout the country. Now, as sending and supporting churches, with the blessing of our faithful Father, we continue to work in the field that He has prepared for us.

Gospel Action Brazil has been involved in a number of different mission aid projects over the years. These include a sewing project, a card project, a used clothing project, and the establishment and operation of the Escola Cristã João Calvino (literally, “School of Christ John Calvin” or, John Calvin Christian School). These projects have been carried out with varying degrees of success and longevity. However, the major focus is now the support of the school.

The school is located in Village Campestre II, a poor neighbourhood in Maceió. Under the motto “Qualified Christian education within each and everyone's grasp”, the school provides a Christian education in five grades for approximately 100 children ranging from five to ten years old. The school began operations in 2002 using space in the Igreja Reformada do Brasil church building. In 2004, with funding from the supporting churches, DVN (“De Verre Naasten”), and the CRWRF (Canadian Reformed World Relief Foundation), a school facility was built beside the church building. The school now receives ongoing operational funding from supporting churches in Classis Niagara and Classis Ontario West, while also self-funding a portion of their budget.

John Calvin Christian School (ECJC) in Maceio is one of the projects supported through Gospel Action Brazil. Through sponsorship programs, our wide range of contributors help to bring Reformed education to many of the local children, helping to create balance in the day to fiscal needs of the school. The sponsorship programs also help to provide opportunities to bring in funds for much needed small and large scale capital requests.

Gospel Action Brazil is excited to help administer three different sponsorship programs, meeting the needs of different parts of the school, and giving better choice to our sponsors on how they can participate. Through the wonderful efforts of our volunteers, 100% of the sponsored dollars goes to the school.

Please take the time to read about the Sponsor a Child, Sponsor a Kit, and Sponsor a Class programs and see how you can contribute now.

Over the years the need to publish reformed Christian material in the Portuguese language has become increasingly apparent. Our missionary Rev. De Graaf became involved with this project by first translating one of his own books into Portuguese and then obtaining permission to translate other Dutch and English books. The work is done with CLIRE and the proceeds from each book go towards the support of additional translation resources. In this way the project is working towards self sustainability while providing much needed Biblical resources to our bothers and sisters in Brazil.

CLIRE (The Centro de Literatura Reformada) - an organization which publishes Reformed literature and organizes Reformed leadership training conferences. The board is made up of men from the Igrejas Reformadas, and the missionaries are heavily involved.
